Odors expressible in language, as long as you speak right language

English speakers struggle to name odors. While there are words such as blue or purple to describe colors, nothing comparable exists to name odors. Even with familiar everyday odors, such as coffee, banana, and chocolate, English speakers only correctly name the smells around 50% of the time. This has led to the conclusion that smells defy words. Majid and Burenhult present new evidence that this is not true in all languages.

Majid and Burenhult conducted research with speakers of Jahai, a hunter-gatherer language spoken in the Malay Peninsula. In Jahai there are around a dozen different words to describe different qualities of smell. For example, ltpɨt is used to describe the smell of various flowers and ripe fruit, durian, perfume, soap, Aquillaria wood, bearcat, etc. Cŋɛs, another smell word, is used for the smell of petrol, smoke, bat droppings and bat caves, some species of millipede, root of wild ginger, etc. These terms refer to different odor qualities and are abstract, in the same way that blue and purple are abstract.

Are Jahai speakers better at naming odors? To test this Majid and Burenhult presented Jahai speakers, and a matched set of English speakers, with the same set of colors and odors to name. Each participant was simply asked to say "What color is this?" or "What odor is this?." Responses were then compared on a number of measures, including length of response, type of response and speaker agreement in names. Majid and Burenhult found that Jahai speakers could name odors with the same conciseness and level of agreement as colors, but English speakers struggled to name odors. Jahai speakers overwhelmingly used abstract Jahai smell words to describe odors, whereas English speakers used mostly source-based descriptions (like a banana) or evaluative descriptions (that's disgusting).

Searching for words

English speakers grapple to describe smells. Their responses for odors were 5 times longer than their responses for colors. This is despite the fact that the smells used in the experiment were familiar to English speakers but not necessarily to the Jahai. For example, English speakers trying to name the smell of cinnamon said it was: spicy, sweet, bayberry, candy, Red Hot, smoky, edible, wine, potpourri, etc.

Studying other cultures

These results question the view that there is a biological limitation for our inability to name smells. Jahai speakers have an elaborate vocabulary for smells that they use with fluency. This means that the inability to name smells is a product of culture and not biology.

Animal cells can communicate by reaching out, touching, study shows

Jan. 2, 2014 — In a finding that directly contradicts the standard biological model of animal cell communication, UCSF scientists have discovered that typical cells in animals have the ability to transmit and receive biological signals by making physical contact with each other, even at long distance.

The mechanism is similar to the way neurons communicate with other cells, and contrasts the standard understanding that non-neuronal cells "basically spit out signaling proteins into extracellular fluid and hope they find the right target," said senior investigator Thomas B. Kornberg, PhD, a professor of biochemistry with the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute.

The paper was published on January 2, 2014 in Science.

Working with living tissue from Drosophila -- fruit flies -- Kornberg and his team demonstrated that cells send out long, thin tubes of cytoplasm called cytonemes, which Kornberg said "can extend across the length of 50 or 100 cells" before touching the cells they are targeting. The point of contact between a cytoneme and its target cell acts as a communications bridge between the two cells.

"It's long been known that neurons communicate in a similar way -- by transferring signals at points of contact called synapses, and transmitting the response over long distances in long tubes called axons," said Kornberg. "However, it's always been thought that this mode of signaling was unique to neurons. We have now shown that many types of animal cells have the same ability to reach out and synapse with one another in order to communicate, using signaling proteins as units of information instead of the neurotransmitters and electrical impulses that neurons use."

In fact, said Kornberg, "I would argue that the only strong experimental data that exists today for a mechanism by which these signaling proteins move from one cell to another is at these points of contact and via cytonemes."

However, he noted, "There are 100 years worth of work and thousands of scientific papers in which it has been simply assumed that these proteins move from one cell to another by moving through extracellular fluid. So this is a fundamentally different way of considering how signaling goes on in tissues."

Working with cells in the Drosophila wing that produce and send the signaling protein Decapentaplegic (Dpp), Kornberg and his team showed that Dpp transfers between cells at the sites where cytonemes form a connection, and that cytonemes are the conduits that move Dpp from cell to cell.

The scientists discovered that the sites of contact have characteristics of synapses formed by neurons. They demonstrated that in flies that had been genetically engineered to lack synapse-making proteins, cells are unable to form synapses or signal successfully.

"In the mutants, the signals that are normally taken up by target cells are not taken up, and signaling is prevented," said Kornberg. "This demonstrates that physical contact is required for signal transfer, signal uptake and signaling."

Kornberg said that a major reason that animal cell cytonemes had not been observed or studied previously is because these structures are too fragile to survive traditional laboratory methods of preparing cells for imaging. "During the last decade or so, though, there have been fantastic technical advances, including new techniques in genetic engineering, new microscopes that improve the resolution and sensitivity for imaging living cells and the development of fluorescent marker proteins that we can attach to proteins of interest."

Using these new technologies, Kornberg and his team have captured vivid images, and even movies, of fluorescent signaling proteins moving through fluorescently marked cytonemes.

"We are not saying that cells always use cytonemes for signaling," Kornberg cautioned. "Hormones, for example, are another method of long distance cell signaling. A cell that takes up insulin does not care where that insulin came from -- a pancreas or an intravenous injection. But there are signals of a specialized type, such as those that pass between stem cells and the cells around them, or signals that determine tissue growth, patterning and function, where the identity of the communicating cells must be precisely defined. It's important that these signals are received in the context of the cells that are making them."

Kornberg noted that other research teams have made observations that suggest that cytoneme-based signaling may also occur "between stem cells and the cells that instruct them on what they are going to do and where they are going to go." Cancer cells may also use this method to communicate with their neighbors, he said.

The discovery of animal cell cytonemes and the critical role they play in long distance signaling "opens up a wonderful biology of which we have very little understanding at this point," said Kornberg. "For example, how do these cytonemes find their targets? How do they know when they have found them? These are some of the questions that we are pursuing."

The key discovery is a kind of cellular pump that was previously unknown in plants. When that pump fails to work properly, as it does in some petunias, the flower petals can't acidify special compartments within their cells. As a result, those petals turn blue instead of red or violet -- much like the litmus paper many of us will recall from chemistry class.

"Blue flower colors have been enigmatic for a long time and the blue rose appears in many myths, legends, and even operas," said Francesca Quattrocchio of the VU-University in Amsterdam. "Already in the 1910s it was proposed that blue flower colors were caused by reduced acidity of the 'cell sap.' Others figured that drastic changes in the cell sap might cause terrible deleterious defects, and proposed that blue flower colors had something to do with the formation of metal-anthocyanin complexes. Our current opinion is that both got it right."

Still, no one really knew how it worked. Scientists discovered one type of proton pump in the 1980s. "Over the decades, the idea took hold that all H+ transport across internal membranes is driven by those v-ATPases," Ronald Koes of VU-University in the Netherlands explained. Not so, the new work shows.

In most cells, there are but modest differences in pH between the insides and the outsides of intracellular compartments or vacuoles. Petals, by comparison, can show much steeper pH gradients. Scientists also knew that the differences in pH between blue petunia petals and red ones were somehow connected to a handful of so-called PH genes.

Quattrocchio and Koes now find that those genes encode a proton-pumping pathway that allows petal cells, and perhaps other cells as well, to hyperacidify particular compartments. The pump is composed of two distinct proteins, which together keep on going -- and building acidity -- even when other pumps would stop. Blue petunias are blue because of genetic defects that leave that special pumping system out of order.

"By studying the difference between blue and red flowers of petunias, we have discovered a novel type of transporter able to strongly acidify the inside of the vacuole," Quattrocchio said.

Now they have the tools to isolate plant varieties with different acidification levels in their vacuoles, she added, and that could prove very fruitful indeed when it comes to generating new colors in valuable flowers or new tastes in fruits, wines, and juices. The researchers say those more acidic vacuoles and the pumps that make them possible might even be exploited as reservoirs for storing toxic compounds, such as metals and salts.

Odor receptors discovered in lungs: Just like ones in the nose, but instead of conjuring up a cup of coffee they might make you cough

Jan. 2, 2014 — Your nose is not the only organ in your body that can sense cigarette smoke wafting through the air. Scientists at Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Iowa have showed that your lungs have odor receptors as well.

Unlike the receptors in your nose, which are located in the membranes of nerve cells, the ones in your lungs are in the membranes of neuroendocrine cells. Instead of sending nerve impulses to your brain that allow it to "perceive" the acrid smell of a burning cigarette somewhere in the vicinity, they trigger the flask-shaped neuroendocrine cells to dump hormones that make your airways constrict.

The newly discovered class of cells expressing olfactory receptors in human airways, called pulmonary neuroendocrine cells, or PNECs, were found by a team led by Yehuda Ben-Sharar, PhD, assistant professor of biology and medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, and including colleagues Steven L. Brody and Michael J. Holtzman of the Washington University School of Medicine, and Michel J. Welsh of the Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.

"We forget," said Ben-Shahar, "that our body plan is a tube within a tube, so our lungs and our gut are open to the external environment. Although they're inside us, they're actually part of our external layer. So they constantly suffer environmental insults," he said, "and it makes sense that we evolved mechanisms to protect ourselves."

In other words, the PNECs, described in the March issue of the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, are sentinels, guards whose job it is to exclude irritating or toxic chemicals.

The cells might be responsible for the chemical hypersensitivity that characterizes respiratory diseases, such chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma. Patients with these diseases are told to avoid traffic fumes, pungent odors, perfumes and similar irritants, which can trigger airway constriction and breathing difficulties.

The odor receptors on the cells, might be a therapeutic target, Ben-Shahar suggests. By blocking them, it might be possible to prevent some attacks, allowing people to cut down on the use of steroids or bronchodilators.

Every breath you take

When a mammal inhales, volatile chemicals flow over two patches of specialized epithelial tissue high up in the nasal passages. These patches are rich in nerve cells with specialized odorant-binding molecules embedded in their membranes.

If a chemical docks on one of these receptors, the neuron fires, sending impulses along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb in the brain, where the signal is integrated with those from hundreds of other similar cells to conjure the scent of old leather or dried lavender.

Aware that airway diseases are characterized by hypersensitivity to volatile stimuli, Ben-Shahar and his colleagues realized that the lungs, like the nose, must have some means of detecting inhaled chemicals.

Earlier a team at the University of Iowa, where Ben-Shahar was a postdoctoral research associate, had searched for genes expressed by patches of tissue from lung transplant donors. They found a group of ciliated cells that express bitter taste receptors. When offending substances were detected, the cilia beat more strongly to sweep them out of the airway. This result was featured on the cover of the August 28, 2009 issue of Science.

But since people are sensitive to many inhaled substances, not just bitter ones, Ben-Shahar decided to look again. This time he found that these tissues also express odor receptors, not on ciliated cells but instead on neuroendocrine cells, flask-shaped cells that dump serotonin and various neuropeptides when they are stimulated.

This made sense. "When people with airway disease have pathological responses to odors, they're usually pretty fast and violent," said Ben-Shahar. "Patients suddenly shut down and can't breath and these cells may explain why."

Ben-Shahar stresses the differences between chemosensation in the nose and in the lung. The cells in the nose are neurons, he points out, each with a narrowly tuned receptor, and their signals must be woven together in the brain to interpret our odor environment.

The cells in the airways are secretory not neuronal cells and they may carry more than one receptor, so they are broadly tuned. Instead of sending nerve impulses to the brain, they flood local nerves and muscles with serotonin and neuropeptides. "They are possibly designed," he said, "to elicit a rapid, physiological response if you inhale something that is bad for you."

The different mechanisms explain why cognition plays a much stronger role in taste and smell than in coughing in response to an irritant. It is possible, for example, to develop a taste for beer. But nobody learns not to cough; the response is rapid and largely automatic.

The scientists suspect these pulmonary neuroscretory cells contribute to the hypersensitivity of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) to airborne irritants. COPD is a group of diseases including emphysema that are characterized by coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

When the scientists looked at the airway tissues from patients with COPD they discovered that they had more of these neurosecretory cells than airway tissues from healthy donors.

Of mice and men

As a geneticist Ben-Shahar would like to go farther, knocking out genes to make sure that the derangement of neurosecretory cells isn't just correlated with airway diseases but instead suffices to produce it.

But there is a problem. "For example, a liver from a mouse and a liver from a human are pretty similar, they express the same types of cells. But the lungs from different mammalian species are often very different; you can see it at a glance," Ben-Shahar said.

"Clearly. "Ben-Shahar said, "primates have evolved distinct cell lineages and signaling systems for respiratory-specific functions. "

This makes it challenging to unravel the biomolecular mechanisms of respiratory diseases.

Still, he is hopeful that the PNEC pathways will provide targets for drugs that would better control asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases. They would be welcome. There has been a steep rise in these diseases in the past few decades, treatment options have been limited, and there are no cures.

Business InterDigital and Blu Wireless to demo 60GHz backhaul

InterDigital - CFRInterDigital and Blu Wireless Technology have completed the first phase of collaborative development to explore millimeter wave solutions for small cell base stations and access points.

The eventual demonstration platform is expected to enable operators to evaluate this technology to more cost effectively increase 4G and 5G backhaul throughput to satisfy their customers’ ever-increasing demands for data, such as high quality mobile video. The platform will also be suited to R&D exploration for 5G millimeter wave mobile access.

It will combine InterDigital’s multi-hop backhaul technology with Blu Wireless’s HYDRA baseband evaluation platform, which was developed for 802.11ad WiFi (WiGig) systems and has been further optimised to speed throughput in backhaul applications.

“The two research teams will enable a significant advance in the application of low-cost millimetre wave technology within the 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure markets,” says Henry Nurser, CEO Blu Wireless.

How 'slippers' can end mascara irritation

Mascara is a mild irritant, and rabbits have, historically, been used to test how much discomfort new products can cause. However, a cheaper and more reliable test is now being developed by scientists at the University of Liverpool, involving miniscule protozoa. This will remove animal cruelty from the equation.

The scientists from the University's Institute of Integrative Biology were able to examine potential toxicity caused by mascara, based on the growth of the protozoa when placed in experimental chambers containing the cosmetic.

Six different brands of mascara were tested, by painting it on small glass plates and placing these in the chambers. The protozoa and their food were then added. The protozoa- the slipper ciliate (Paramecium caudatum) and the eyelash ciliate (Blepharisma japonicum) -- were chosen carefully because of their large size, their historic use as model organisms, and their genetic similarities to humans.

Their large size enabled the scientists to visually measure population growth using a microscope, and they were able to show that this varied according to the brand of mascara and the amount in the chamber. There was a substantial difference between brands, with some killing the protozoa and others not harming them at all.

Dr David Montagnes, who supervised the project suggests: "This test has great potential for reducing the use of rabbits as it is both cheap and reliable, and while the protozoa have a similar metabolism to animals they are not classed as such. Indeed, the traditional test used on rabbits -- the Draize test -- was developed more than 40 years ago and is both time consuming and expensive, as well as giving rise to ethical issues."

Montagnes went on to add: "When you can develop a simpler and cheaper alternative, there is really no need to test cosmetics on animals."

The research was part of an undergraduate final-year research project (the senior author is the student, Hayley Thomason), and is now published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Sciences.

Hayley said: "I'm very keen to establish a career as a cosmetic scientist and having the opportunity to work on a research project like this is an important step on that path."

Microsemi is targetting power-over-Ethernet designs with a diode bridge based on a dual pack of mosfet-based full-bridge rectifiers.

The device’s mosfets have an R(DS) of 0.16ohm, which will keep efficiency and output power high for power-over-Ethernet (PoE) and power-over-HDBaseT (PoH) applications including wireless LAN access points, small cells and small switches/routers.

“In PoE- and PoH-powered solutions when high-efficiency or high-power was required, system designers were used to implementing their designs using discrete components. This highly integrated solution dissipates less power, simplifies the customer’s design and saves printed circuit board space,” said Iris Shuker, PoE product line manager for Microsemi.

Microsemi’s PD70224 can support over 1A of current in two-pair applications compliant with IEEE802.3af and IEEE802.3at, but also for four-pair powered devices using Universal PoE (up to 51W) and PoH (up to 95W).

The entire drive circuitry for driving the mosfets is on-chip, including a charge pump for driving the high-side N-channel mosfets.

The total forward drop (bridge offset) introduced by the ideal bridge rectifier is only 192mV at 0.6A, compared to a standard bridge rectifier that typically presents 2,000mV of forward drop.

Business Scottish start-up gets funding to develop smartphone sensors

PyreosPyreos, an Edinburgh-based infrared sensor start-up, has secured $4m of funding and appointed CEO, Rob Baxter.

Pyreos develops infrared sensor products using passive-infrared technology for applications in the oil and gas sector, but also touchless gesture control of smartphones and tablet PCs and detection medical illnesses such as diabetes.

The passive-infrared sensor technology run off micro-watts of power making them interesting for gesture and proximity designs by smartphone manufacturers.

The $4m funding secured by Pyreos will enable the company to grow the touchless, human gesture command marketplace by initially launching two separate products which specialise in human gesture and proximity recognition at a near range of 20cm and another at a range of up to 1 meter in the smartphone and tablet markets as well as open up further growth opportunities within the PC, TV, docking station, audio speaker and smart energy device markets which are equally attracting significant customer traction.

New CEO Baxter was previously CEO at Validity Sensors, acquired recently by Synaptics and formally as CEO at Centrality Communications which was acquired by SiRF Technologies in 2007.

Howard Ford, Chairman of the Pyreos Board said “After a selection process involving world-class candidates, our decision to appoint Rob Baxter was based on his outstanding experience of driving companies of Pyreos’ market position and size to success and we look forward to our continued growth and success under his leadership.”

The investment, led by Robert Bosch Venture Capital, Seraphim Capital, Siemens Technology Accelerator and the Scottish Investment Bank (SIB).

“We are excited to support Pyreos in exploiting existing and untapped opportunities within the field of human, touchless gesture and proximity control using Pyreos’ core technology. The design breakthrough they have achieved in reducing power consumption and hence eliminating the long-standing, industry barrier of the battery drainage issue means the potential in mobile and handeld applications across consumer and industrial markets globally, is expolsive,” said Claus Schmidt, managing director of Robert Bosch Venture Capital.

The firm’s sensor’s are already used in the industrial gas and flame markets and also in the handheld spectroscopy market.

The European Leaders Group (ELG) have reported back to EC vice president Neelie Kroes about how to implement her plan to Increase Europe’s share of the world semiconductor market to 20%.

“The ELG addressed the challenge put forward by VP Kroes to double the value of semiconductor production in Europe,” says a statement by Kroes’ office, “the roadmap will be published in the beginning of 2014 and the group will then focus on implementation and execution.”

“All options are envisaged starting with the expansion and the upgrading of existing capacity, to the potential for new facilities,” says the statement, “ambitious pilot lines for new technologies and new forms of production including leading-edge equipment and material technology will be supported, beginning in 2014. These will build on the 1.8 billion euros investment and experience in ENIAC pilot lines launched in 2012-2013. Future capacity will be matched to demand growth.”

“The plan includes initiatives on chip design and architectures aiming at strengthening the design and fabless industries and the whole electronic component ecosystem in Europe. It will commence in 2014 with specific R&D&I initiatives to provide easy and affordable access to manufacturing facilities for design SMEs and to support the development of multidisciplinary skills.”

The statement continues: “Europe will continue to invest to prepare for the next generation of production materials and equipment for diversified needs including mixed production in 300mm and the transition to 450mm.”

Violin Memory, which sacked its CEO on December 16th after sacking its CTO the previous week, sacked its COO, Dixon Doll, yesterday.

Violin, which does flash-based enterprise storage promoting the ‘all-silicon data centre”, is in a state of chaos, IPO’d last September at $9 a share. The shares are currently selling for $3.90.

There are seven shareholder lawsuits filed against the company for allegedly not revealing the full facts about the company’s situation ahead of the IPO.

In November Violin Memory reported a loss of $34 million on revenues of $28 million. The sacked CEO was on-track to receive 2013 total pay and stock compensation of $19 million.

Activist shareholder Clinton Group is said to be pushing the company to sell itself.

Violin has cash of $134 million and credit lines of $58 million.

No scrounging for scraps: Research uncovers diets of middle, lower class in Pompeii

Steven Ellis, a University of Cincinnati associate professor of classics, will present these discoveries on Jan. 4, at the joint annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) and American Philological Association (APA) in Chicago.

UC teams of archaeologists have spent more than a decade at two city blocks within a non-elite district in the Roman city of Pompeii, which was buried under a volcano in 79 AD. The excavations are uncovering the earlier use of buildings that would have dated back to the 6th century.

Ellis says the excavation is producing a complete archaeological analysis of homes, shops and businesses at a forgotten area inside one of the busiest gates of Pompeii, the Porta Stabia.

The area covers 10 separate building plots and a total of 20 shop fronts, most of which served food and drink. The waste that was examined included collections from drains as well as 10 latrines and cesspits, which yielded mineralized and charred food waste coming from kitchens and excrement. Ellis says among the discoveries in the drains was an abundance of the remains of fully-processed foods, especially grains.

"The material from the drains revealed a range and quantity of materials to suggest a rather clear socio-economic distinction between the activities and consumption habits of each property, which were otherwise indistinguishable hospitality businesses," says Ellis. Findings revealed foods that would have been inexpensive and widely available, such as grains, fruits, nuts, olives, lentils, local fish and chicken eggs, as well as minimal cuts of more expensive meat and salted fish from Spain. Waste from neighboring drains would also turn up less of a variety of foods, revealing a socioeconomic distinction between neighbors.

A drain from a central property revealed a richer variety of foods as well as imports from outside Italy, such as shellfish, sea urchin and even delicacies including the butchered leg joint of a giraffe.

"That the bone represents the height of exotic food is underscored by the fact that this is thought to be the only giraffe bone ever recorded from an archaeological excavation in Roman Italy," says Ellis. "How part of the animal, butchered, came to be a kitchen scrap in a seemingly standard Pompeian restaurant not only speaks to long-distance trade in exotic and wild animals, but also something of the richness, variety and range of a non-elite diet."

Deposits also included exotic and imported spices, some from as far away as Indonesia.

Ellis adds that one of the deposits dates as far back as the 4th century, which he says is a particularly valuable discovery, since few other ritual deposits survived from that early stage in the development of Pompeii.

"The ultimate aim of our research is to reveal the structural and social relationships over time between working-class Pompeian households, as well as to determine the role that sub-elites played in the shaping of the city, and to register their response to city-and Mediterranean-wide historical, political and economic developments. However, one of the larger datasets and themes of our research has been diet and the infrastructure of food consumption and food ways," says Ellis.

He adds that as a result of the discoveries, "The traditional vision of some mass of hapless lemmings -- scrounging for whatever they can pinch from the side of a street, or huddled around a bowl of gruel -- needs to be replaced by a higher fare and standard of living, at least for the urbanites in Pompeii.
